The author and researcher João Gomes de Abreu, co-founder of Planeta Tangerina, died on Tuesday in Lisbon at the age of 51, as a result of prolonged illness, told Lusa source close to the family.

João Gomes de Abreu is the author of the illustrated books “The island”, designed by Yara Kono, and “The figs are for those who pass”, illustrated by Bernardo P. Carvalho, both edited by Planet Tangerina, editorial and design project in which he was in the foundation.
“The island”, the first book published, earned it an honorable mention in 2013 for its literary debut at the Bologna Children’s and Youth Book Fair in Italy.
“I took care of many things at the same time, believing that design and management are essential structures for us to be freer to create,” wrote Planet Tangerina on social networks to remind the author.
João Gomes de Abreu was born in Mozambique in 1974 and grew up on Madeira Island. In Lisbon, he studied Communication Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon.
He was involved in the Landscape Museum, a research, awareness and education project “for landscape citizenship”, in which he published and was an editorial coordinator.
As an example, he conceived and organized the books “Mineral Land — Vegetal Land” and “Major Road”, both with Duarte Belo, and cosigned “Search for a tree”, with Madalena Matoso and Maria Manuel Pedrosa.
João Gomes de Abreu was also a professor of Design at the Escola Superior de Comunicação Social in Lisbon, and this institution lamented the death of “one of the most creative and visionary personalities” of the academic community.
