The Northern Doctors Union (NMS) today denounced that the emergency rooms of the Braga Hospital are “at risk” because they are open with “undersized teams” and “a huge overload”.

“It is a huge overload for the doctors who are there working with undersized teams, with a load that is taking the doctors who are there to exhaustion”, warned Lusa, in statements to the president of this union, Joana Bordalo and Sá, who is also vice president of the National Federation of Doctors (FNAM).
Contacted by Lusa, the Local Health Unit of Braga (ULSB) said that it is “monitoring in a very close and committed manner”, in conjunction with those responsible for the urgency, the evolution of the activity and the average waiting times expected for care in this service.
“ULSB will continue to closely monitor, throughout the weekend, the turnout to the emergency department, in order to anticipate any additional needs, with full transparency and responsibility,” said the health unit, expressing a “word of strong recognition to all professionals” who have ensured care to users seeking care.
Joana Bordalo and Sá denounced that, in the case of the urgency of the Hospital de Braga, “the lack of staff of the staff” in the National Health System (SNS) and the dependence of service providers are having effects, especially in surgery and obstetrics.
In General Surgery, he explained, there should be “five or six” medical specialists in the picture, “but the truth is they never get more than three doctors in the picture and the rest of the doctors are usually service providers who ensure the rest”.
When these service providers are not present, the three doctors in the board “are for the whole hospital” and have to ensure “all jobs”, which forces them to be in the operating room to perform surgeries, to support hospitalized patients and still to be in the screening, the union leader stressed.
” Doctors do the best they can and the best they can, but then this ceases to be human, is highly insecure,” said the trade unionist, who advises all doctors to deliver statements of no responsibility.
The oncologist also reported that the hospital claims to be in the emergency room of open obstetrics, but that there are no specialists there in several periods.
” It behaves as having everything open, when in fact they do not have gynecologists and obstetricians there in many periods – also this weekend – to be able to see the pregnant women who arrive by their own feet to the urgency”, he said, adding that, after being evaluated, some users are redirected to Famalicão or Guimarães.
In a statement released on Friday, the NMS said it required “urgent clarifications” to the Board of Directors of ULSB to know what “measures taken to ensure the security of urgency, contingency plan and structural solutions for the lack of doctors”.
