Portuguese cinemas recorded 5.4 million viewers in the first half of this year, which represented a loss of 108 thousand entries compared to the same period of 2025, today revealed the Cinema and Audiovisual Institute (ICA).

Son the exhibition of cinema in Portugal in the first semester, the ICA also indicates that, despite this 2% fall in audience, the cinemas totaled 37.2 million euros of gross box office revenue, an increase of 5.8% compared to 2025.
According to this body, in June 498 cinemas were operating in Portugal, i.e. 42 screens less than in June 2025, as a result of the closure of several premises of NOS Lusomundo Cinemas and the insolvency proceedings of the exhibition company Cineplace.
In terms of box office revenue, NOS Lusomundo Cinemas remains the leading company among movie showers, with a market share of 71.4% in Portugal, followed by UCI Movies with 14.2%.
In number of viewers, NOS is also a leader with a 68.2% share of the exhibition market, followed by UCI with 14%.
Despite leadership, ICA data indicate that NOS Lusomundo Cinemas had, in June this year, less 22 cinemas, for a total of 196 screens.
“The Maid”, by Paul Feig, was the most watched film by the Portuguese in the first half of 2026, totaling 549,525 entries and about 3.6 million euros of box office revenue.
Of the 31 Portuguese production films premiered in the room, the film most viewed in the semester was “Global Project”, by Ivo M. Ferreira, with 9,125 viewers.
The Portuguese films premiered in the room amounted to 385,664 euros of gross box office revenue and 80,233 entries, which means a share of 1% and 1.5%, respectively, against the total market.
