AndAt the end of the NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Ankara, Luís Montenegro said that the government has always argued that “diplomatic, negotiating routes are the right ones to restore normality in the Middle East”.

Therefore, “what we want is that this [peace process] may have less disturbance and more consistency over time. It is something that does not depend on us, depends on the parties involved,” he said.

The Prime Minister insisted that the desire of the Portuguese Government is that, “despite some intermittent polemics in the relationship between the parties involved, it may preponderate what is essential: a ceasefire solution that will restore normality in that region”.

Montenegro argued that normality in the Middle East is crucial to ensuring “navigability in the Strait of Ormuz”, with the consequences that this has from an economic point of view, but also to ensuring that Iran “does not have a nuclear weapon” and that the security of the Alliance is not “put into question by this route”.

The Prime Minister reacted to the statements of the President of the United States who this morning, on the margins of the NATO summit, said that the ceasefire with Iran ended and nicknamed Iranian leaders scum and liars.

“As far as I am concerned, it is over,” Donald Trump replied to journalists on the margins of the NATO summit, which ends today in Ankara, Turkey’s capital.

Trump stated that he “does not want to deal with these people anymore”, calling the Iranian leaders “scum”, “lie” and “violent and cruel people who if they had a nuclear weapon, would use it”.
