The Prime Minister said today that there is an “absolute unity” in NATO as to the functioning and objectives of the Alliance, stressing that there was “no quarrel” or divergence during the leaders’ summit, in an allusion to Trump.

AndAt the end of the NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Ankara, Louis Montenegro said that during the meeting “the unity between the entire Alliance” and the “strength of the transatlantic bond” was confirmed.
“Around the table there was total convergence, consonance of views on the subjects being dealt with. Of all, without exception. There was no quarrel, no controversy, in the interventions of all the allies,” he assured.
The Prime Minister stressed that, although there are, on the margin, “some disturbances that happen and often draw attention to what is essential”, the “unit around the objectives and principles of functioning of the Atlantic Alliance were absolute”.
“I will repeat, because it was still so: they were absolute. There was not a single divergence with regard to the objectives of bringing Europe closer to that of the United States of America, from the point of view of capabilities, to the great objectives of deterrence, the promotion of peace and the conditions that give us security to guarantee the fundamental rights of citizens,” he said.
The Prime Minister also said that during the summit all the allies reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, “whose struggle and absolutely crucial” for the security of the Alliance and for the preservation of its “democratic values”.
As part of this support to Kyiv, Luís Montenegro said that Portugal has committed itself to “reissue military and financial support in 2026” which it provided in 2024 and 2025, but will increase its participation in the NATO PURL programme, which coordinates and buys and delivers military equipment to Ukraine by another EUR 50 million.
