The image shows a child supported by a crutch, with an arm and leg amputated and dressed in a white blood-stained sweater. The child is on a pedestal, surrounded by ancient statues, equally with broken members, all to be targeted and photographed, by people in backlight, as if displayed in a museum.
In a statement, the World Press Cartoon organization underlines a “work of strong humanitarian and social criticism” by André Carrilho, who again receives the Grand Prix, already won in 2015, with an editorial design on the Ebola virus.
In previous editions, André Carrilho won the second Caricatura prize in 2021 and 2006, the third prize in this category in 2005 and four honorable mentions in 2008, 2011, 2020 and 2022.
