Fourteen dead and six injured in traffic accidents in Angola

Fourteen people died and six were injured in a car crash involving an informal taxi car this morning in the town of Bember, province of Huíla, Angola, local authorities reported.

Na press release that Lusa had access to, the National Service and Civil Protection and Firefighters said that the accident occurred at 07:20 (the same time in Lisbon), in this locality about 24 kilometers from the municipal headquarters, on the National Road EN-280.

 

According to the firemen, there was a loss, and the car then hit the bridge over the Bember River, with a medium-sized fire.

The vehicle carried 20 people, 14 of whom were burned to death, while six were injured and transported to the Lubango Central Hospital.

In official channels, the Angolan National Police reported that “five wounded are in critical condition.”.

The cause of the accident was speeding, according to preliminary data cited by the National Service and Civil Protection and Fire Department.

In the statement, the firefighters, who extinguished the fire and removed the victims, note that the concrete circumstances of the accident are “subject to confirmation by the competent authorities”.

In Angola, traffic accidents are the second cause of death after malaria.

The newsletter of the last 72 hours of the Civil Protection and Fire Department, referring to the period between Friday and Sunday, indicates among the occurrences the record of 19 traffic accidents, with a balance of 42 injuries, occurring in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo, Cuanza Sul, Cubango, Huambo, Uíje, Icolo and Bengo, Moxico and Cuanza Norte.

The balance of Luanda provincial command of the National Police for the last 72 hours accounts for 22 traffic accidents, which resulted in seven deaths and 29 injuries.
