O cEO Vodafone Portugal (CEO) said today that the football rights market in Portugal is highly overrated because there are no revenue covering costs and considered that the centralization of rights will be a disruptive moment.

Luís Lopes spoke at a meeting with journalists, which took place at the company headquarters in Lisbon.

The football rights market “is heavily overrated, there are no revenues that cover costs,” he said.

Vodafone Portugal is one of the shareholders of SportTV.

“The value of the revenue coming from SportTV is much lower than the costs that operators pay” that company, continued.

According to the CEO, “there is a bad contract from an economic point of view”, since the “recipes for the distribution of sports content in Portugal are below costs”.

Luís Lopes explained that operators lose “large millions of euros by selling the SportTV service”, as a distributor of SortTV to their customers.

However, the centralization of rights on 27/28 will be “a disruptive moment in this sector,” he said, without anticipating any scenario.
