A Slovakia and the Russian Federation have re-established diplomatic-military relations with the exchange of representatives in the face of criticism from the European Slovak opposition, which warned of possible risks of espionage, today the Czech digital Ekonomicky Denik reported.

The governments of Bratislava and Moscow had mutually removed the military representatives after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Slovak Prime Minister, populist Robert Fico, announced in May, during a trip to Moscow, the intention to resume diplomatic-military relations with the Russian Federation.

I remain, whose country is still dependent on Russian hydrocarbons, said at the time that it does not want to limit its relationship with Moscow to energy.

Liberal opponents of Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) filed a complaint against Fico for alleged crimes of high treason, abuse of authority, inhuman behavior – by cutting power to Ukraine – and terrorism.

The opposition is concerned that the return of a Russian military attaché may increase the margin for manoeuvre of Moscow intelligence services in the country.

Mr Tomas Valasek, of the PS progressives, quoted by the Ekonomicky Denik, said that the exchange of military attachés mainly benefits the Russian Federation.

It also warned that the Russian attaché could participate in misinformation and influence operations, rekindle social tensions and influence Slovak public opinion on the Russian Federation.
