The results of Mercadona
The Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona had profits of 26 million euros in Portugal in 2025 and more than tripled the result of the previous year, the company announced in March.
The company closed 2025 with 69 supermarkets in Portugal (nine more than at the end of 2024) and sales rose 18% last year, to 2,092 million euros, announced in Valencia, Spain, where Mercadona is headquartered.
500 new jobs were created in Portugal in 2025 and Mercadona now has 7,500 people working in the country, the only one in which it is present outside Spain.
In addition to 70 stores (a new supermarket was opened this year), Mercadona has two logistics centers in Portugal and one of them, in Almeirim, opened last year, is the largest of all that the company has in the entire Iberian Peninsula.
Last year, the total investment in Portugal amounted to EUR 140 million and, since 2019, it has surpassed the 1,230 million, according to data released today.
Mercadona has about 1,000 suppliers in Portugal, to whom it bought 1,500 million euros last year, according to the company, which ensures buying 85% of all products from suppliers of the Iberian Peninsula.
“ We are very happy how Portugal works. We still have to continue to improve profits, but we are very pleased,” said Mercadona President Juan Roig today in presenting the results in Valencia today.
Juan Roig revealed that the company estimates to move profits from between 45 and 50 million euros this year in Portugal and will open 12 new supermarkets in the country throughout the year, expanding to four new districts.
