Pope Leo XIV spent a quiet night at Gemelli Hospital in Rome after having undergone surgery on Tuesday to remove the lower lobe from the right lung, following confirmation of a cancer diagnosis, the Vatican reported today.
According to the medical report released after surgery, which lasted 90 minutes, the tests confirmed a pulmonary adenocarcinoma, whose suspicion had arisen during preoperative examinations.
The Vatican today reported that the pontiff spent a quiet evening, bringing new information about his health to later.
On Monday, the Holy See had announced the cancellation of all audiences of the Pope until October 20.
However, in a first message released after surgery, Leo XIV thanked the prayers of the faithful and confessed “especially grateful to the families who spoke about their joys, battles and hopes”.
“ As you know, I couldn't be among you these days. I sincerely thank you for your prayers and for what you have done. The sharing of experiences and attentive listening are, in fact, a gift for the whole Church”, he began by writing in the missive, addressed to Catholics who attended a symposium for the 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia, an official document that was also written by Pope Francis, his predecessor.
Leo XIV, the first American Pope of history, was elected on May 8, 2025, succeeding Francis, who died at the age of 88.
