O United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed his dismay at the “terrible attack” on two buses in Ukraine today, which killed 30.
“The scale and nature of these attacks — which killed and injured people on buses, their homes and their workplaces in different regions of the country — are reprehensible,” Türk said in a statement.
Since Monday, at least 85 civilians have been killed and 346 others have been injured in Russian bombings, according to reports.
At the same time, many regions of Ukraine were in the dark after a series of long-range attacks on power plants and power plants, Türk added.
“Ukraine already faces planned failures and cuts in energy supply even before low temperatures and shorter days lead to increased demand for electricity,” he said.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also expressed deep concern at reports of Ukrainian attacks that caused deaths and injuries among civilians in the occupied territories and in Russia.
“ Civilians are strictly protected by the laws of war and can never be taken for attack. In addition, the parties must always seek to save the civilian population,” he recalled.
“ The alleged violations must be investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable. Deliberate attacks on civilians can constitute war crimes,” he said.
