Donald Trump said this Tuesday at a Republican rally in Alaska that Taiwan undertook to buy 30% of the gas transported by the Alaska LNG pipeline for two decades and invest 4,400 million dollars in the project.

“Taiwan has just agreed to buy 30% of the gas that comes out of the pipeline for the next 20 years. That guarantees success. It is one of the greatest commitments in history (...). It's one of the biggest deals that's ever been made. They will pay for it, and it is a 20-year period that guarantees success,” said the President of the United States.

Until now, Taiwan’s state energy company, CPC Corporation, had only signed a letter of intent to invest in the project, presented in March 2025. Now, according to Trump, he signed an investment commitment of $4,400 million (EUR 3,926 million) in 30% of Alaska LNG and to remain a shareholder for two decades.

Trump thanked Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who presented as “the real Dan Sullivan” in an allusion to a homonym without party affiliation, who runs against him in the November elections, and to Deputy Nick Begich, who praised him for his work in Congress.

According to Trump, the agreement adds up to more than 50,000 million dollars (EUR 44,615 million) which, according to the White House, South Korea will invest in Alaska LNG, a figure announced on September 30.

Seoul, however, stated that this investment is not yet confirmed and that it depends on the commercial viability of the project.

The Alaska project, which has been waiting for funding for years, has faced doubts about the costs and commercial viability.

Trump defended the initiative as a way to increase US energy exports and strengthen ties with Asian allies.

This Tuesday, the President also called on the Alaskan population to vote “yes” in Measure 2, which, if approved, will repeal the electoral system approved in 2020: the open primary, in which the four most voted candidates advance to the general election, even if they belong to the same party, and the vote in order of preference in the general elections.

“It’s a fraud, it’s a Democratic fraud,” he said, adding that he had asked the federal prosecutor of the state to see that there was no fraud.

Trump also signed two pardon documents to three co-owners of a vehicle repair shop who, in 2022, declared themselves guilty, each, of an accusation of violation of the Clean Air Act. Two of the targets were present.

The President has moved to Alaska to support Senator Dan S. Sullivan, who is looking for a third term in a dispute that the Democrats consider an opportunity to regain the seat and control of the Upper House, although in nearly 20 years the state has not elected a Democrat for the Senate.

In the Senate race, Sullivan faces, in addition to a homonym, former Democratic deputy Mary Peltola and Republican Gerald Heikes.
