A Republican National Guard (GNR) rescued, this Friday, a juvenile copy of black vulture, who was wounded, in the municipality of Alcochete.

In a statement sent to the editors, GNR stated that, after the animal was collected, the black vulture was delivered to the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) in Alcochete.

Subsequently, the ICNF “sustained the referral to the Animal Recovery Center in Monsanto, Lisbon, where it will receive the necessary medical and veterinary care for its recovery”.

According to GNR, “black vulture is one of the largest birds of prey in the world, reaching about 1.20 meters long and a wingspan of more than three meters. It feeds mainly on dead animals, playing a key role in the balance of ecosystems through the natural elimination of animal cadavers”.

“ In Portugal, the black vulture is classified as ‘Critically in Danger’, and its conservation is particularly important for the protection of biodiversity and the recovery of the populations of this species’, can be read.
