ANDthis announcement was made by José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, after opening symbolically the main door of the Assembly of the Republic to citizens on the anniversary of the 116th anniversary of the implementation of the Republic in Portugal.

“ From the last Saturday of this month, we will open the Assembly of the Republic on Saturday so that everyone can visit it, not only in working or post-labor time, but they can also come at the weekend live, see, watch, question, ask and feel as their greatest symbol of democracy”, stated in his brief speech.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic said that the opening to the public of Parliament, on Saturdays, “is an experience that will be to continue” and, regarding the revolution of October 5, 1910, spoke about the concept of “Res Publica”.

“Public Res, that is, Public Thing, and it’s no small thing to remember this every time we celebrate the Republic, because it means that democracy respects everyone, not only those who represent us, not only those who beg also to speak on behalf of us, it is democracy that respects everyone,” he said.

José Pedro Aguiar-Branco pointed out after the Parliament “is the most important body of sovereignty in a democracy, because it is in the Assembly of the Republic that the sovereign will of the people is expressed every time there are elections”.

“ It makes a lot of sense, therefore, to open the doors of Parliament so that the people, the people, all of us, can visit what is the most important body of sovereignty in a democracy, the Assembly of the Republic,” he added.
