Mozambique and Germany signed new cooperation commitments worth €89.45 million for energy, climate and humanitarian aid projects, strengthening the bilateral partnership, the German embassy announced today.
The new commitments were established during the 2026 bilateral government negotiations held on Wednesday in Maputo, according to a statement released today by the German diplomatic mission in Mozambique.
The main areas of planned investment include the energy sector and a contribution to the Climate and Development Partnership, aimed at strengthening Mozambique's climate resilience.
According to the embassy, the climate partnership, signed in 2024, supports the objectives of climate and energy transition policies, strengthens climate resilience and consolidates Mozambique's position as a regional renewable energy supplier in Southern Africa.
Cited in the statement, the director for Europe and the Americas of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and head of the Mozambican delegation, António Bambissa, considered Germany a “uncountable” partner in cooperation.
“Our partnership is anchored in the government’s priorities and contributes to moving forward in strategic sectors such as energy, vocational training, good governance or the situation of displaced people,” he said.
In turn, the representative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and head of the German delegation, Birgit Gerhardus, said that the new commitment reaffirms the bilateral partnership in a year when the two countries mark 50 years of diplomatic relations.
“Our cooperation presents concrete results. For example, our comprehensive cooperation in the energy sector has contributed to increasing the country’s electrification rate from 34% in 2019 to the current 66.9%, and to Mozambique’s goal of ‘Energy for All’ by 2030,” he said.
According to the document, Germany and Mozambique have been cooperating for four decades in the areas of development and humanitarian aid, and Berlin is one of the main bilateral partners of the Mozambican Government in these areas.
It also states that cooperation between the two countries covers priority areas such as good financial governance and decentralization, vocational training and employment promotion, the development of the private and financial sectors, focusing on agriculture, energy and climate, as well as support for internally displaced persons in the north of the country, adds.
