A Sweden will maintain cooperation with Mozambique in the energy and humanitarian sectors, despite the gradual closure of bilateral development cooperation announced at the end of 2025, the Swedish ambassador said today.

“ We will continue with a solid partnership in the energy sector. And we will also continue in the humanitarian sector,” said Swedish ambassador to Mozambique, Andrés Jato, in Maputo.

According to the diplomat, the reorientation of Swedish cooperation does not mean the end of the relationship between the two countries.

“ So Sweden remains an important partner of Mozambique, especially in the energy sector and the humanitarian sector,” he said.

Jato added that Stockholm intends to continue to work with the Mozambican authorities on expanding access to energy through both the national electricity network and decentralised solutions.

“Sweden will also continue to work with Mozambican authorities in the energy sector, ‘off-grid and on-grid’,” he said.

The diplomat said that the results achieved by energy cooperation reinforce the intention to maintain support for the sector.

“ We are very proud of the results we have achieved together, but also proud to be able to say that we will continue the partnership with Mozambique, which is fundamental for the development of this country,” he said.

The declarations appear about ten months after Sweden announced the gradual closure of bilateral development cooperation with Mozambique in a process planned to be completed by August 2026.

At the time, the Swedish Government explained that the decision was not related to the Mozambican internal situation, but to a review of the country's foreign aid policy and new security challenges faced by Sweden.

The announcement stated, however, that Mozambique would remain a relevant partner and that humanitarian support would be maintained.

During the closing ceremony of the BRILE Programme, funded by Sweden and the United Kingdom, the ambassador highlighted the results achieved in the energy sector over the last seven years.

“ Today we celebrate a project that has proposed to be ambitious, a project that has fulfilled ", said.

According to the diplomat, the initiative helped to extend access to energy to about five million Mozambicans and helped consolidate the market for energy solutions outside the power grid.

“Sweden will continue to build on this experience, working with Mozambican and international partners to support sustainable energy,” he concluded.
