A Ascendi concluded an investment of EUR 40 million in requalification and construction work associated with a highway concession in the Spanish region of Aragon, which is to be managed until 2049, the Portuguese company announced today.

In a statement, Ascendi points out that AIGI Iberica, a company that controls in partnership with builders of the Aragon Region, completed the requalification and construction work associated with the road concession of Itinerary 2 – Zaragoza West before the contractually foreseen deadline of January 2027. The concession now enters the full phase of operation and maintenance, which will last until 2049.

According to him, the concession – which covers about 161.5 kilometres of roads in the Aragon region, in a network consisting of roads A-121, A-122, A-202 and A-220 – “now enter the full phase of operation and maintenance, which will last until 2049”.

The concession of the road network under the Extraordinary Road Investment Programme of the Government of Aragón was awarded in 2022 to AIGI Iberica de Gestión Infrastructure in 2022 following an international tender.

AIGI is owned by a consortium of shareholders led by Portuguese Ascendi, with a participation of 75%.

The completion of the work, developed in partnership with builders of the Aragon region and involving an initial investment of €39.41 million, is highlighted by Ascendi as “a relevant milestone” for the company’s presence in Spain, materializing the work developed since July 2024.

The concession includes the operation, maintenance, surveillance and modernisation of road infrastructure for a period of 25 years, and includes the West Zaragoza route, identified as a “strategic axis for freight transport and regional mobility, fundamental for economic competitiveness and territorial cohesion”.

According to Ascendi, the programme involved “a comprehensive set of requalification and construction work aimed at modernizing infrastructure and strengthening security conditions”, and the intervention also included measures for environmental integration and fauna protection.

“ With a contractual duration of 25 years, the project now enters into a cycle of operation and integral maintenance, supported by a long-term management model that ensures the conservation of infrastructure, the safety of circulation and high levels of service quality ", says.

According to details, operational activity covers monitoring, conservation and maintenance of infrastructure, as well as circulation management and response to occurrences.

Cited in the statement, Ascendi’s executive president, Luis Silva Santos, states that the completion of the work “represents an important milestone” for the company “and for the concession of Aragon”.

“ The renewal of this network, extensive and technically demanding, demonstrates the experience and the ability of our teams to manage road infrastructure throughout their entire life cycle,” he said.

Based in Porto, Ascendi is dedicated to the management of assets, operation and maintenance of road infrastructure and the provision of toll collection services, having activity in Portugal, France, Holland and Spain.

Ascendi's capital is controlled by Ardian, an independent private investment company based in France and which manages assets in Europe, North America and Asia.
