Mayor of New York argues that genocide in Gaza is not over yet

The “mayor” of New York today lamented that the “suffering” that began with the attacks of October 7, 2023 on Israeli territory did not end that day, because “it continued with the genocide of Israel in Gaza.”.

“ ANDthis day is deeply painful for many New Yorkers. Three years of the atrocious war crimes of ‘October 7’ are highlighted. On that day, Hamas killed over 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped 251 other people, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.

“ We share the pain of our many friends and neighbors, who still carry the weight of this unimaginable loss. The suffering did not begin or end that day,” Mamdani warned in a message released on social media, in which he also regretted the “persistent genocide” in the Gaza Strip.

“ On the contrary, suffering continued through the persistent genocide perpetrated by the Israeli Government in Gaza, where more than 74,000 Palestinians died, including over 21,000 children. Even after the supposed ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians died,” he explained about the truce just over a year ago.

For Mamdani, this suffering “has intensified with every Israeli bomb launched against ambulances waiting in front of hospitals, with each drone attack directed against residential buildings or journalists, and with every shipment of food aid rejected on border crossings”.

“ Many New Yorkers face this unbearable pain and we join in their mourning, aware at the same time that our taxes finance these war crimes. Three years later, we have to refuse to accept a world where occupation and apartheid persist, where war crimes go unpunished and where our federal government keeps its complicity through every shipment of weapons,” he said.

He therefore urged “to fight for a world in which all people can live in freedom, security and dignity, so as to honor the dead.”.

His words were quickly criticised by the Israeli authorities, with Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, accusing ‘mamdanism’ of having become an attempt to kidnap the anniversary of ‘October 7’ and turn it into another propaganda attack against Israel’.

“It’s like turning 9/11 into a day of mourning for Al Qaida terrorists. We won't let that happen. We will remember those who were killed and we will never forget who was behind this massacre,” Danon said.
