Portuguese cinemas record a 3.7% drop in spectators in September

Portuguese cinemas had a 3.7% drop in the number of viewers in September, according to ICA, totaling 748 thousand.

Othe Portuguese cinemas recorded a 3.7% decrease in the number of spectators in September, compared to the homologous month of 2025, for a total of 748 thousand, today revealed the Cinema and Audiovisual Institute (ICA).

 

Still, compared to the first nine months of 2025, the current year is seeing a 9.8% increase in total viewers to 9.3 million compared to 8.4 million January to September last year.

For its part, in the field of revenue, in September there was an almost identical percentage increase, in the opposite direction, to the fall in viewers: revenues rose by 3.8% to 5.4 million euros, above 5.2 million September 2025.

In the accumulated 2026, revenue is more than 20% above the first nine months of 2025, totaling EUR 64.8 million.

According to data from ICA, the most viewed film of September was the Portuguese “Santo António – O Casamenteiro de Lisboa”, by Ruben Alves, with close to 151 thousand viewers and a revenue of more than one million euros, thus becoming the most viewed national film of the year.

The most viewed film of the year in Portugal is “Spiderman: A New Day”, with 885 thousand spectators, followed by Christopher Nolan’s “Odyssey”, with 774,000 people.

The new film starring American actor Tom Cruise, “Digger”, which premiered worldwide on October 1, was removed at the last minute from theaters in the Chinese regions of Macau and Hong Kong.
