A saudi Arabia-led military coalition announced on Sunday that it intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by the Huthis rebels in an area southeast of Riyadh where Prince Sultan's air base is located.
“ Interception and destruction of a ballistic missile in Al-Kharj launched by the terrorist militia Huthi,” said the coalition, which supports the internationally recognized government of Yemen in a statement.
On Saturday, an attack on the Huthis rebels in Yemen, supported by Iran, against King Khalid airport in Riyadh, caused at least 12 deaths, of which eight foreigners, and 309 injured, including some in a serious state, indicated the Saudi civil aviation authority, in the latest balance sheet.
The same entity also reported “material damage” at the international airport.
The Saudi Air Authority confirmed on Saturday the suspension of flights at Riyadh airport after an attack, without specifying the origin, but what diplomatic source cited by the French agency AFP attributed to Huthis.
The operations were temporarily suspended until the damage was assessed and the safety of the premises was checked, he added.
