Foreign debt disbursements fall 51% in the second quarter

Cape Verde's foreign debt disbursements fell by 51.4% in the second quarter to ECU 2.51 billion (EUR 22.7 million) against EUR 5.16 billion (EUR 46.8 million) in the same period of 2025, according to official figures.

A the reduction corresponds to minus 2.65 billion escudos (EUR 24 million) received by the Central Government, all disbursements being made through long-term loans, according to the data disclosed by the Ministry of Finance.

 

Multilateral creditors have secured more than 98% of the quarter disbursements, yet 50.5% lower than the one year before.

Disbursements of bilateral creditors fell by 75.9% and there were no disbursements of commercial private creditors.

The World Bank, through the International Development Association (IDA), was the main individual source of funding, with 1.2 billion escudos (11 million euros), followed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with 971.2 million escudos (8.8 million euros).

By destination, budgetary aid absorbed 46.3% of all the external disbursements of the quarter, followed by tourism and transport (19 %) and information technologies (10.9%).

Despite the decline in disbursements, the service of external debt has increased slightly from 7.03 to 7.06 billion escudos (EUR 63.8 to 64 million) since the second quarter of 2025.

The stock of external debt remained virtually unchanged in the 20.7 billion escudos (EUR 1.8 billion), but its GDP weight fell from 67.1% to 61.6% in a year.
