The year 2026 is being strong for electric cars, which are gaining much ground on the car market in the context of rising fuel prices.

The latest data show that Portugal follows the trend of electrification. Disclosed last week by the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP), show that in september 47.7 percent of new cars registered were electric – 9,338 copies, plus 87.4 percent than in the same month of 2025. The best-selling brand of the month was even Tesla, with Model 3 leading the search – more than two thousand registered units.

These figures appear in a month when 19.589 new passenger cars were registered, at a rise of 15.2 percent compared to September 2026.

The electric hybrids registered were 17.6 percent of the market in September (3,446 cars), while the plug-in hybrids represented 15.4 percent (3.022 units, slightly less than in 2025).

Electrics also dominate total of the year

From January to September, there were 188,912 new registrations of passengers in Portugal (an increase of 10.1 percent compared to the same period of 2025).

In this case, electrics represent 29 percent of sales (54.726 registered units) far more than the sum of gasoline and diesel models (23.2 percent, 19.7 percent + 3.5 percent).

And compared to the other models of new energies, electrics beat hybrids (26.2 percent), 49.431) and plug-in hybrids (15 percent), 28,328). Altogether, vehicles powered by alternative energy were responsible for 76.8 percent of the new enrollments in the first nine months of the year.

Car sales continue to grow in Portugal. Highlighted electrics

In September, the Portuguese car market grew again, now 13.4 percent (15.2 percent with only the light passengers). Accumulated growth exceeds ten percent compared to 2025.
