O russian government has today declared that it has sold hydrocarbons to European countries for more than $320 billion since 2022, despite the sanctions imposed against it due to the invasion of Ukraine.
“ This figure amounts to USD 320,7 billion (about EUR 286 billion) in the period 2022 to today. It corresponds to the supply of energy resources to the countries of the European Union,” Vice Prime Minister Alexandre Novak said on television.
This year, by the end of September, Europeans spent $21.3 billion on Russian hydrocarbons.
The European Union has decided to impose several sanctions on the Russian Federation after the invasion of Ukraine, but several states continue to buy it hydrocarbons, such as liquefied natural gas, in the case of France.
Slovakia and Hungary, on the other hand, buy oil, which comes to them by pipeline.
This total, however, does not consider Russian hydrocarbons arriving in Europe indirectly, after being transformed into third countries such as India and Turkey, which increased massively, like China, their purchases of Russian oil after 2022.
This situation aroused the criticism of Donald Trump, who, for his part, announced on Friday an agreement for the supply by the Russians of diesel fuel to calm prices.
“The European Union has paid Russia 250 billion dollars for its energy, and the means do not want to talk about it. I made a good choice for the (North American) people,” Trump said on Monday on his social network, referring to an amount below that mentioned by Moscow.
The U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in turn, criticised on Sunday the “hypocrisy” of Europeans, who “continue to finance Vladimir Putin”, while “seeking that we cannot benefit from a drop in the price of diesel”.
Putin’s adviser for international economic relations, Kirill Dmitries, also called on Monday “the incredible hypocrisy of EU bureaucrats”.
Asked about the diesel agreement, Novak estimated that the Russian Federation, one of the world’s leading hydrocarbons products, “can reach a monthly sales volume of between three million and 3.5 million tonnes on world markets, as before the crisis”.
