Othe bombers were taken to their bases of origin in the United States, according to statements made today by a Pentagon officer to the Associated Press news agency, which does not mention its name since the military was not allowed to discuss sensitive military movements.
Aviation observers (enthusiasts, civilians and analysts), such as the Military Air Tracking Alliance, observed dozens of B-52 and B-1 bombers operating from the RAF Fairford since the early days of the war with Iran and reported seeing a series of B-1 bombers taking off from that base today.
The measure comes at a time when American President Donald Trump is assessing the options for his war against Iran — including new attacks — despite his initial promises that the campaign would last only a few weeks.
“ We have decisions to make about Iran. Iran has been decimated. So the only question is: it will be the easy way or the hard way,” Trump told reporters on Saturday, leaving the White House for a rally in Ohio.
A British and Iranian citizen of dual nationality was arrested last week in central London on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack following a security incident at the RAF Fairford Air Base in late September.
In total, six people were arrested and later released on bail during the investigation.
The British authorities linked the incident to Tehran.
Although Iran has denied any involvement, the country has already stated that it considers any basis used to attack its territory as a legitimate target.
The UK authorities state that Iran-supported groups have been responsible for a series of attacks in US allied countries, many of which have addressed the Jewish community, and have warned that Tehran will be able to expand its targets in the United Kingdom if conflicts in the Middle East continue.
The RAF Fairford, located 160 kilometers from London, was used by American bombers during decades of conflict in the Middle East.
The U.S. military still maintain a considerable presence in the region, with a U.S. official saying on Thursday that the newly deployed USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier, as well as the amphibious readiness group USS Malkin Island — a group of ships carrying more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 marines — are on their way to the region.
