Uthe former Turkish minister was put in protective custody today as part of an investigation into a scandal involving a billion-dollar investment fund that has damaged numerous investors, Anadolu said.
Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya was put in protective custody by an Istanbul court for “violation of organised group financial market legislation” according to the official agency.
Kaya served as Minister of the Family between 2016 and 2018 and until recently was vice president of AKP, the ruling party, of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
He resigned from office on 26 September after the Yeni opposition party accused him of making huge profits in this financial scandal.
The former director and her husband have allegedly profited several million thanks to transactions with shares they have resold before the scandal goes public, raising suspicions of insider trading. Later, Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya left the party.
Turkey faces the repercussions of a scandal related to an investment fund, which came to light in mid-September.
The prosecutor is investigating suspicions of widespread market manipulations, which will have affected the savings of about half a million investors.
On Tuesday, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that 112 people had been put in protective custody in this case.
Researchers discovered a “vast criminal network” that had infiltrated the highest spheres of Turkish financial markets, the minister said.
