O case involving Ana Clara, a five-year-old girl who died after being shot by the Brazilian military police, dates back to 2021, but this year, the case still remains a subject, namely, in the debate between Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, who are fighting tomorrow the elections for the presidency.
In the last debate, which took place on Friday, there was talk of corruption, security and cost of living, with mutual accusations and increasing tension. At one point, which you can see in the gallery above, the current president spoke about the case – given that Bolsonaro was part of the agent’s defense attorneys’ team, at least since 2024, when the case had passed the first instances. The senator's name appears as the first of five related defenders in a judgment of April 2024, according to judicial documents cited by Folha de S. Paulo.
“All of Brazil would like to know why a senator in the Republic prevents a murdering police officer from being tried. What leads a senator to defend a police officer who shot a 5-year-old girl?”, Lula da Silva questioned.
Lula also said that Ana Clara’s mother was watching the debate and when it was Bolsonaro’s turn to speak, the presidential candidate looked into the chamber, and called the mother of the child with the daughter’s name: “Ana Clara, I want to speak to you: it was a tragedy what happened. I can't imagine what it's like to lose a 5-year-old girl [...]. I want to help to know who was the author of the shooting, because I have the confidence that it was not this policeman ", pointed.
At the same time that Flávio Bolsonaro began to speak, changing the name of his mother, who is called Cristiane Silva, she herself shouted from the public: “She died.”.

The agent in question was denounced by the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor for murder, but responded to the process of release. According to the charge, the military police fired toward a residential area, assuming the risk of hitting residents. It is further argued that there was no armed confrontation at the scene and that the shooting continued even after the police were warned by the residents that there were people in the area, such as Ana Clara, who was playing near home, along with her two-year-old brother.
Flávio Bolsonaro was part of his team of lawyers, who argue that there was an exchange of gunfire with traffickers in an area dominated by Red Command and that the child was caught in the crossfire. The team also claimed that there had been an error in the production of evidence, since the crime scene would not have been preserved for analysis.
The trial was scheduled for 21 October this year, last Wednesday, but was rescheduled for 5 May 2027, more than six years after the child's death.
