O fIFA president Gianni Infantino today ensured that a large majority of the national federations supported his re-candidacy despite the many criticisms received after World Cup2026.
“ I think the important thing within an organization like FIFA is that there are different opinions, different points of life. But if we take democracy and the democratic process seriously, if we believe that everyone has the same voice and vote and that football belongs to everyone, then we must respect the opinion of the great, great majority”, he said.
In an interview with the BBC, Infantino said he was in Tokyo, where he received “total support” from the Asian Confederation, the same happening in Cape Verde, where all African countries showed to be at his side.
At this time, there has not been any opposition candidate to Infantine, less than a month from the deadline for the submission of applications, scheduled for November 18.
“There are different views, it is not always easy to put them all under the same roof, but we must respect and I respect all opinions. In the end, FIFA member associations will decide who they come as president and how FIFA should be directed,” he assured.
The Italian-Switzerland leader has faced growing opposition, after having promoted in July, without prior consultation, a project to sell World Championship participations to private investors through a new commercial company, a proposal in which he would back down.
Despite the decline in the World Trade Project, several confederations such as Europe (UEFA) and North America, Central and Caribbean (CONCACAF) maintain pressure and demand the departure of Infantine from FIFA, as well as several member federations.
