O former Guinean Prime Minister Nuno Nabiam today proposed that the legislative and presidential elections scheduled for December and the extended transition period to one or two years be postponed, reports the local press consulted by Lusa.
The leader of the United People's Assembly – Democratic Party of Guinea-Bissau (APU-PDGB) also advocates the formation of a government of national reconciliation.
Nabiam, who became special adviser to former President Umaro Sissoco Embalo argues that “factual, legal and operational conditions make elections on December 6 unenforceable”.
The priorities, the politician, “should not be hasty, but the creation of useful political time” for national reconciliation and the “overcoming of accumulated political fractures”.
Nuno Nabiam advocates the opening of “a cycle of one to two years” of consensual transition, agreed between the living forces of the nation, with a focus on stabilization, “healing”, ensuring the unconditional return of Guineans currently abroad and safeguarding fundamental rights.
The former Prime Minister calls for a national “wide base” government to include cross-cutting political sensitivities from various regions of the country and historical forces, with a “clear mandate” and flexible timetable for “preparing the definitive institutional ground”.
The proposal emphasises that the measure aims to ensure tranquility to institutions and legal and physical security to the bodies that support the State, including the Armed Forces, preventing the “vicious circle” from instability, deep crises and “pressures of artificial calendars”.
On November 26, 2025, the Guinean military led a coup d'état led by General Horta Inta-a, former head of security in the Presidency of the Republic.
The opposition considered that it was a “ceremonial coup” for taking place on the eve of the announcement of the provisional results of the presidential elections, which the bloc defends have been won “at first turn” by Fernando Dias da Costa.
General Horta Inta scheduled it for December 6 next new legislative and presidential elections.
Horta Inta called for today the transitional government and the National Election Commission (CNE) to assess whether or not the election was possible on its date.
