O 18-year-old boy had been under investigation for almost two years, texting a confidential informant, before the agents sold him the rifle and ammunition, the u.s. federal police revealed.

“ This was a radical young man who needed to be watched,” U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said in praising the FBI investigation.

The agents “were able to detect a threat and interrupt it, before the defendant carried out his intention to kill, in his words, maybe 30 to 60 people, as we claim in much more detail in the complaint,” he said

Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, 18, was arrested on Tuesday in a public park in Richfield, several miles northwest of the Mall of America, after paying $600 to an FBI official, disguised as an ISIS member, by an AK-47 and 200 ammunition, according to the criminal charge.

In text messages with a confidential FBI informant, Mohamud has repeatedly confirmed his intention to carry out an attack to kill non-Muslims, the charge is advanced.

So far, it's not known if the teenager has a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
