Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced on Tuesday night that Ghana asked for support from India, one of the founding countries of the group, for the candidacy, which presented as an effort to diversify the country's economic and diplomatic partners.
“President John Dramani Mahama’s office decided that Ghana should make an official request to join the BRICS,” said the minister to journalists alongside Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
“ Joining India in BRICS offers us economic options, diversifys our base and our partners and will also strengthen our cooperation within the framework of the Global South,” he added.
Jaishankar indicated that India supports Ghana's aspirations, stressing that membership will have to be assessed by the whole group.
The bloc was created in 2009 as BRIC, to bring together the largest emerging economies (Brazil, Russia, India and China), outside the institutions dominated by the United States and the Western powers, such as the G7, and passed to BRICS with the entry of South Africa in 2010.
The group has expanded in recent years to welcome other countries of the Global South, such as Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia, and Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
