Ua 47-year-old man was in custody for suspicion of domestic violence against the former partner, in Sintra, after being arrested for the third time in the context of occurrences related to the same victim, announced today the PSP.
In a statement, the Public Security Police states that the arrest was carried out by the Cascais Criminal Investigation Squad of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command, in compliance with warrants issued by the judicial authority.
According to the police, this is the “third arrest of the suspect for facts related to the same victim”, with the continuation of alleged conduct despite previous police and judicial interventions.
The man had been sentenced, in May of this year, “to a sentence of three years in prison, suspended in his execution”, also in the context of a process of domestic violence involving the former partner.
It was again detained on 11 August following new facts, and it was applied the measures of coercion of daily presentations to the authorities and of prohibition to travel to the municipality of Sintra (Lisbon district), a measure monitored by electronic surveillance.
However, according to the investigation, the suspect will have continued “to adopt intimidating and threatening behaviors directed at the victim”, reads in the statement.
Between August and September, on different occasions and in the presence of the former companion, the man will have made gestures around the neck “simulating a throat”.
In view of the alleged repetition of the conduct and the elements collected during the investigation, the judicial authority determined the issuing of new arrest warrants.
The suspect was subject to the most serious strain, the preventive arrest, after the first judicial interrogation.
The PSP recalls that domestic violence is a public crime and calls for the denunciation of all such situations, stressing that timely intervention can prevent the escalation of violence and protect victims.
