Jorge Jesus was taken by surprise by the video published, on Thursday, by Cristiano Ronaldo, on social networks, in which he himself made public the intention to renounce the main selection of Portugal, at 41 years old, according to information advanced, already this Friday, by the newspaper The Ball.
The player of Al Nassr will have informed the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Pedro Proença, that he would not put on the jersey of the team of quinas, but did not do the same with the national selector, who even planned to summon him for the last two games of the League of Nations group stage.
Despite what happened in the last break for international commitments, when the advance chose to abandon the concentration of the selection, in disagreement with the way it was being managed, the coach continued to count on it. A feeling that, however, was not reciprocal.
After accusing Jorge Jesus of failing to speak on two different occasions, Cristiano Ronaldo made the decision not to play for the Portuguese formulation as long as it was there, so, knowing that he would call it, he preferred to ‘play in anticipation’ and to give his route to end at the international level.
“I have to accept his decision”
Jorge Jesus’ reaction to Christian Ronaldo’s decision would eventually appear shortly after he made it public: “Cris is a world reference, from Portugal, of the selection... You've given the selection a lot over the years. It is a symbol for Portuguese youth. I had a chance to share a year with him at Al Nassr. It'll always be a selection reference. I had a great image of him put in the auditorium”.
“We had a chance to talk about this before the first call. I asked him to go on, because I needed him to be around me, but I have to accept his decision. It will always be in the heart of the Portuguese, in the selection... There's no turning back. It will always be a reference in Portuguese football”, he said, in declarations given to Canal 11.
The Madeiran, remember, was sanctioned with 30 days of suspension (and a fine of 255 euros), by abandoning the concentration of the national team, on 30 September, on the eve of the victory achieved in the trip to Parken, over Denmark, for 2-4, and it ended on 30 October.
Jorge Jesus announces summoned already this Friday
After Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘goodbye’, Jorge Jesus is now preparing to announce the list of players called for the last two days of the League of Nations group phase, in which Portugal will take the lead Denmark (on November 14, Braga Municipal Stadium) and Wales (three days later, at Cardiff City Stadium).
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 12 noon (Portugal time) in the City of Football in Oeiras. The team of quinas, remember, already has guaranteed clearance for the quarter finals, with 12 points won in 12 possible, so it remains only to ensure the leadership of Group 4.
