A u.S. justice ordered the suspension of some controversial announcements by US President Donald Trump, which are financed with public funds, when it is just over three weeks before the mid-term elections.

Federal judge Jennifer Rochon, of the Court of the South District of New York, ordered on Sunday the immediate suspension of an advertising campaign about Trump that had been funded with funds from the Department of Homeland Security, considering that irreparable damage could occur if it did not suspend it.

The magistrate also blocked an allocation of $20 million (EUR 17.8 million) for the production and dissemination of advertisements.

The order entered into force at 18:45 Sunday (23:45 in Lisbon) and will remain in force for 14 days, unless the court prolongs it.

The judge announced that she will soon publish a decision with all the arguments that led her to make the decision.

The announcements combine praise to the President, messages against political opponents and the exaltation of some of the latest military actions, such as the arrest of the deposed Venezuelan leader, Nicolás Maduro, and the war against Iran.

Following the controversy, the White House maintained that the announcements are public service and educational messages, and denied that they constitute electoral propaganda.

Trump personally defended the expenditure and said that he is not promoting himself, since he is not a candidate in the November elections, but is “promoting the country”.

The President also stated that he would be willing to pay the amount personally if it were determined that the expenditure was undue.
