O russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is going to Iran next Monday for contacts with the Iranian counterpart on the measures taken by Moscow to resolve the conflict with the United States and Israel.
At a press conference, the spokesman for Russian diplomacy, Maria Zakharova, said today that the two ministers intend to discuss regional and international issues in detail, with emphasis on the situation around Iran and on the “steps taken by the Russian side” on the relief of tension.
Zakharova stressed that the current situation “is the fault of the United States and Israel” and that countries close to Moscow in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf were “struck” to the situation, referring to Iranian attacks on the civil infrastructure of some states in the region.
Before the trip to Iran, Lavrov will participate in Bahrain in a new round of dialogue between Russia and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week in a telephone contact with American counterpart Donald Trump that the United States and Iran “can and should” reach a peace agreement.
“Putin stressed in particular that the potential of diplomacy towards Iran is far from exhausted and that the parties can and should reach an agreement,” said Yuri Ushakov, International Policy Advisor of the Russian Presidency.
Putin had already pointed out that Tehran makes “real attempts” to put an end to the conflict, adding that the Russian proposal on the transport of Iranian enriched uranium to Russia remains as a possible way out of the deadlock.
In response, Donald Trump thanked Moscow for its involvement in resolving the situation about Iran.
