Luis Maximo dos Santos will leave the administration of Banco de Portugal (BdP) at the end of this month, where he is currently vice governor, second official source of the central bank.
Maximo dos Santos, who has been a member of the Board of Directors of the BdP since June 2016, ceases his duties on October 31.
Official source of the BdP does not indicate the reason for the departure of Maximo dos Santos, who is responsible for the legal department, the resolution department and the department of investigation and sanctioning action.
He is also president of the Deposit Guarantee Fund and the Resolution Fund, the latter being the entity responsible for rescuing banks (such as BES and Banif).
As head of the banking resolution entity, Máximo dos Santos had in recent years a strong intervention in the decisions related to the management of the Novo Banco dossier, the bank created to keep BES assets at the time of its resolution (in August 2014), either because there was a recapitalization agreement of the Novo Banco by the Resolution Fund (the Resolution Fund injected EUR 3.405 million into the Novo Banco, causing several political and media polemics for the use of public money) or because the Resolution Fund was until recently a shareholder of the Novo Banco (last April the bank was sold to the French BPCE group, including the part held by the Resolution Fund).
Born in 1961, a graduate and master of law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, Luís Máximo dos Santos became an official of Banco de Portugal in 1992.
He was also president of Banco Espírito Santo (after the resolution) between 2014-2016, under the designation of Banco de Portugal, and president of Banco Privado Português (between 2010-2016), by designation of the Lisbon Trade Court on a proposal from Banco de Portugal.
As administrator of Banco de Portugal, Maximo dos Santos passed three governors (Carlos Costa, Mário Centeno and Álvaro santos Pereira, the current one).
