A mEO operator will modernise 189 mobile network stations in the Azores until the end of 2027, through about 600 capacity expansions of 4G and 5G networks, announced today the company.

Following a visit by MEO’s executive commission, led by CEO Ana Figueiredo, Ponta Delgada, the company states that it will advance with “more than 600 capacity expansions of 4G and 5G networks, distributed across the nine islands.”.

In a press release, MEO recalls that it has more than 95% fiber coverage in the Azores, 4G mobile coverage covering 100% of the population and a continuous reinforcement of the 5G network, which increased in the last year from 85.2% to 87.7%.

In 2026, the new stations were in operation at the airport of Santa Maria and São João, at Pico, and there were still four in São Miguel, Santa Maria, Faial and Flores, according to MEO.

Cited in a press release, Ana Figueiredo said that “in the Azores, the capacity and robustness of communications networks are key to bringing people, businesses and services closer together in a region distributed across nine islands.”.

According to the CEO, this modernization plan “will enable the capacity of the mobile network to be strengthened and the infrastructure prepared to meet the connectivity needs of the population and business fabric”.

During the visit, the company signed a cooperation protocol with the University of the Azores, which provides for contact initiatives between MEO and the academic community, through participation in employment fairs, curricular internships, academic projects, workshops and lectures for Azorean students.

The MEO Foundation and the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, in Ponta delgada, on the island of São Miguel, also signed a memorandum of understanding for the creation of a “Space with Sense”, in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service.

The MEO Foundation will provide communication support equipment, specialized furniture and training for hospital professionals, and the space will serve disabled or disabled users who have complex communication needs.
