O prime Minister today accused extreme left-wing movements and parties of intending to recreate in Portugal a climate of social indignation, as happens in Spain after the recent death of the elderly Maricarmen, who had been the victim of eviction.
The reference to the case of Maricarmen, from Madrid, who died at the age of 87, was made in the debate fortnightly, in the Assembly of the Republic, by the parliamentary leader of the CDS, Paulo Nuncio, who asked the Prime Minister whether it is possible for a citizen over 65 to be the subject of eviction.
In the answer, the executive leader stressed that with the current urban lease law, or even with the one that his Government presented to Parliament – and which awaits debate in the specialty – the eviction that Maricarmen was victim “could not occur in Portugal”.
“There is an absolute protection from similar circumstances,” he said.
Louis Montenegro said he refused to comment on what is happening in Spain.
But the Prime Minister expressed his conviction that ‘the leftmost parties in this Parliament want to try everything to see if they can recreate some movements of social indignation’.
Before, Paul Nuncio had not only criticized the extreme left, but extended his attack on the Spanish socialist government itself.
“The [Maricarmen] case was instrumentalized in a populist way by the Spanish socialist government, which used the media to divert attention from the case of Ceuta and the numerous corruption cases that are affecting the PSOE,” he said.
