Portugal came to play-off by winning Group B3, in which it added five wins and a defeat, before Finland, Slovakia and Latvia, on a path guided by the performances of Benfica's former football player, who added six goals and three assists.
Northern Ireland, which never competed in any World Cup, was third ranked in Group B2, with two victories and four defeats, behind Switzerland and Turkey and just ahead of Malta.
The whole of the 'quinas' seeks to repeat the unprecedented presence in the World Cup of 2023, in Australia and New Zealand, where it fell into the group phase, losing with the Netherlands (0-1), winning Vietnam (2-0) and stalling with the United States (0-0).
Under the command of Francisco Neto, Portugal also marked presence in the last three Europeans (2017, 2022 and 2025), in which it was also always eliminated in the group phase.
