O former Cape Verdean President and combatant for independence, Pedro Pires, presides over the commission of honor for the re-candidacy of José Maria Neves to the presidency of the Republic in the elections on November 15, announced today.

“ In a world marked by deep uncertainties (...), Cape Verde needs an experienced President of the Republic, who is “close to the citizens” and who is “able to represent [the country] with dignity and credibility”, reads the statement of support of the committee.

The Honor Committee reports that it has about 100 subscribers, including independence fighters, Ana Maria Cabral, widow of Amílcar Cabral, Carlos Lopes, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, and artists such as Mário Lúcio, Dino D’Santiago or Mayra Andrade.

José Maria Neves had already been Prime Minister for three terms, between 2001 and 2016, as leader of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV) – of which he has already received official support.

In 2021, he won the presidential elections in the first round, with 51.8% of the votes.

Carlos Veiga, former Prime Minister and founder of the MpD, came second, with 42.4%.

This year, the voting card also includes former Justice Minister Joana Rosa, supported by the Movement for Democracy (MpD, opposition), Gilson Alves, doctor, Casimiro Pina, jurist, Antero Tavares, judge, and Loisito Sousa, professor.
