A World Health Organization (WHO) said today that it does not have enough information to assess the death by pneumonia of a Russian employee, possibly a plague victim.

Death had initially been associated in some versions with an alleged escape of the pathogen at the Russian research centre.

“WHO requested additional information on laboratory tests carried out on the deceased person and contacts, more details on what motivated the adoption of public health measures and the state of health of contacts,” said the Director-General of the organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“ At the moment, the organisation does not have a complete picture of what happened and cannot carry out an exhaustive risk assessment,” added the UN agency’s head.
