Ain addition to the regatta back to the world, Porto will still receive a special race in 2028, with the city hosting at least six more events over the next 13 years, such as Ocean Race Europe.
“Oporto and Portugal have a deep maritime identity, a powerful connection with the Atlantic and a growing and important role in sport, science, innovation and the blue economy,” Ocean Race president Richard Brisius said.
On Tuesday, the Porto Municipal Assembly approved the proposal to receive Ocean Race, with Kasa da Praia as its headquarters, with the creation of a Museum of the Oceans and with a charge of 22 million euros, a proposal that counted on the votes against CDU, Livre and BE and the abstention of PS and independent Fernando Cardoso.
“Port has always been shaped by its relationship with the ocean. The Atlantic is part of our history and our identity, but increasingly it is also part of our future,” said the mayor of Porto, Pedro Duarte, quoted by the organization.
Ocean Race had its first edition in 1973 and the next start on 17 January 2027 from Alicante, a Spanish city that will host the big match for the sixth time.
Before the departure of Porto, the Ocean Race still passes through Portugal, with the fourth stage ending in Cascais after having started in Florida, with the city of Lisbon district still seeing the departure for the last link, which will end in the Red Sea in Amala, Saudi Arabia.
Before, Lisbon had received passages in three consecutive editions – 2012, 2014 and 2017.
