O President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, today makes the final assessment of the State of the Nation at the opening of the new legislative year at the National Assembly.
The message of the Head of State is the “central moment” of the opening plenary session of the 5th legislative session of the 5th legislature, the last one before the general elections next year.
At the end of his second term, João Lourenço is prevented by the Constitution from running in these elections and is expected to make a balance sheet of almost a decade today to accumulate the functions of head of state, holder of executive power and Commander-in-Chief of Angola's Armed Forces.
The message on the State of the Nation of the President of the Republic is announced for 10:00 locals (the same time in Lisbon).
According to the Angolan Constitution, the President of Angola addresses to the country, at the opening of the Parliamentary year, in the National Assembly, a message about the State of the Nation and the policies advocated for the resolution of the main issues, promoting the welfare of Angolans and developing the country.
The new legislative year, which begins today, will be the last of the current legislature that began on September 16, 2022, after the general elections.
The Angolans vote in 2027 to choose the new President of the Republic and the new composition of the parliament with the simultaneous election of members of the National Assembly.
The general elections in Angola are held “preferentially” during the second half of August of the year in which the mandates of the President of the Republic and Members end, and it is up to the President of the Republic to fix this date, as established by the Constitution.
