«We are living today in an environment of world anarchy in which the use of force prevails over the strength of reason and law, in flagrant opposition to the rules governing international relations", said the Angolan Head of State.
João Lourenço spoke on Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly on the first day of the 81st session, held until September 28, in New York, under the motto “Restore confidence, manage transformation: a United Nations Organization at the service of all”.
João Lourenço began by condemning terrorism in all its forms to add that, “in addition to terrorism that remains active in some countries, particularly in Africa, the world peace and security situation is worsening year after year”.
The Angolan Head of State expressed “deep concern” with the direction that the world has taken by understanding that “it is frighteningly approaching a global conflagration”.
"We are witnessing in our day a subalternization and violation of the rules governing international relations, prevailing the logic of force, intimidation and the imposition of values arising from the unilateral view of some countries in the defence of their exclusive interests", he said.
The instability in various regions of the world is, for João Lourenço, “a direct consequence of this attitude” and pointed out the conflicts that take place in Europe, the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and Africa, as tension also increases in the Asia-Pacific region.
"The attempt to dominate by force the weapons of entire countries and regions of the globe has led the world to a disaster," he said, stressing that "the food, energy and humanitarian security situation of countries and the world in general has deteriorated considerably after the outbreak of wars" such as those of Ukraine and Iran.
João Lourenço pointed out “the direct involvement of some permanent members of the UN Security Council in the bloodiest and most destructive conflicts of today in Europe and the Persian Gulf, which is a cause for concern and a bad example for the rest of the world”.
"At a time when the good governance of countries is much defended, the governance of the world also calls for a new, more democratic and just world order, which is not based solely on the power of the restricted club of the winners of a war that took place eight decades ago," he said.
The President of Angola argued that "it is becoming increasingly urgent and urgent that the United Nations Security Council should be reformed in depth, in which Africa, Latin America and Asia should be adequately represented, as permanent members with all the necessary powers".
The Angolan Head of State also referred to the need to reflect deeply on the United Nations, the only legitimate institution on the planet, and to house all the nations of the world in order to find the best solutions for achieving global peace
João Lourenço also pointed out that Angola has sought to contribute to peace and recalled the extraordinary summit of the African Union on the mechanisms for the detection and resolution of conflicts in August in Luanda, and the Pan African Forum for the Cultural of Peace and Non-Violence, Luanda Biennial, scheduled for October.
