O Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) made the usual weekly forecast for next week, October 12-18, anticipating “high temperature values” in mainland Portugal.
“ Next week, high temperature values are expected in the territory of mainland Portugal, with a heat wave expected to occur in much of the territory.”, states in a note shared on social networks.
The IPMA also notes that “the occurrence of hot seasons in October is very frequent in the territory of the continent” and that since 2017 “seven heat waves have been recorded in October”.
It also explains that in 2017 there were “two heat waves” and that only in the years 2019 and 2020 did they not happen.
However, according to IPMA, “the persistence of a high pressure system (anticyclone) in the region of the Iberian Peninsula will favor the occurrence of low cloudy or clean sky, weak wind, above normal temperature values for the time of year and no precipitation”.
As for the maximum temperature, “it will be more than 25oC in the general territory, except for some sites in the coastal range, and it may exceed 30oC in Alentejo and Vale do Tejo”.
The minimum temperature, “although it is unlikely to reach 20oC, will have relatively high values, between 14 and 18oC, being slightly lower in the North.”.
Remember that Meteored Portugal had already indicated that next week should be marked by “temperatures above normal and little precipitation”.
“ Although the temporal distance still requires some caution regarding the exact values, the models point to a very hot start of week for mid-October ", he said.
