O russian president Vladimir Putin met today with the Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, before a regional summit in Turkmenistan, and reaffirmed Moscow's support for the end of the war in the Middle East, Russia's news agencies reported.

“ We are ready to do everything in our power to contribute to the resolution of this situation,” Putin said, adding that Iran is doing “genuine efforts to end the conflict”, initiated on 28 February with an Israeli-American offensive against the Islamic Republic.

The Kremlin had announced that the meeting between Putin and Pezeshkian would take place on Friday, after the meeting of the leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (IEC), but the two leaders decided to anticipate the meeting for today.

The leader of the Kremlin welcomed “positive development” in relations between Russia and Iran, which strengthened its diplomatic and military ties since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Iran has been accused by Kiev and the West of providing Russia with technology to produce Shahed drones and short-range missiles, while Moscow is assigned data sharing with Tehran on targets of American interests in the Middle East.

In early September, the Iranian President thanked Putin for his position in the Middle East war, praising the “strategic relationship” between the two countries.

The Russian President also asked Pezeshkian to convey “his best wishes” to Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the former guide, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a bombing in Tehran on the first day of war.

Putin has repeatedly condemned the murder of Ali Khamenei as “a tremendous mistake”, and also of Iran’s former National Security Advisor Ali Larijani, describing him as someone who was able to reach agreements.

Mojtaba Khamenei, in turn, has not been seen in public since his father's death and his statements to the nation have been read on state television by presenters.

During the meeting with Pezeshkian, Vladimir Putin stressed that trade between Russia and Iran, despite Western sanctions, increased by 21% in 2025, a trend that continued in the first seven months of this year.

The Russian and Iranian presidents had already met in September, at a summit in Kyrgyzstan, and previously in Turkmenistan, in December 2025.

The two leaders arrived in Turkmenistan tonight to participate in the CIS summit, which brings together former Soviet republics, in a context of geopolitical confrontation with the West.

The American President, Donald Trump, said today that he will not launch attacks against Iran “at any time before the mid-term elections” for the US Congress, which takes place on November 3, and indicated that he is holding “productive” talks with Tehran.

In a publication on its platform, Truth Social, the leader of the White House once again insisted that Iran “will have no nuclear weapons”, one of its main claims towards the Islamic Republic.
