Quase thousand under 18 years of age died in Ukraine and Russia as a result of the war started by Moscow in February 2022, today reported the Russian independent media Meduza.
According to the portal, quoted by the Spanish agency EFE, war was the cause of at least 940 deaths of children under 18.
To achieve this, journalists analyzed data from international organizations, authorities on both sides, as well as social media publications, police reports and press articles, among other open sources.
Almost all cases were confirmed by two or more sources.
Medusa underlines that its analysis includes the deaths of minors in Ukrainian territory within the borders of 1991, i.e. together with Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporijia and Kherson, which were annexed by Moscow between 2014 and 2022.
Data for Russia include only the territory of the internationally recognised country.
According to the media, by September 2026, 873 deaths in Ukraine and 67 in Russia may be confirmed.
This is only an initial estimate, as the actual number of victims may be much higher, Medusa indicated, who stressed that this year the number of deaths among Russian and Ukrainian children increased compared to other periods of war.
