A Czech Republic announced this Tuesday that it will not participate in the next edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, scheduled for May 2027, due to “budgetary adjustments” of state television, Česká Televize (CT).

“ In view of the current budgetary adjustments, Česká Televize decided not to participate in the 2027 edition”, reads in a press release.

In the note, CT explained that Eurovision is a large project, which requires significant resources at the level of programming, production and organization. Still, he did not rule out the possibility of returning to the competition another year.

“ We evaluated each edition of the competition individually and, therefore, we do not want to speculate at this stage about when Česká Televize will return to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest”, he added.

A European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises Eurovision, has regretted that “Česká Televize cannot participate in the Eurovision Song Contest of 2027 due to the financial pressures it is facing”.

“ We fully understand that public stations are having to make difficult decisions and recognize the serious challenges that many of our members face,” said Martin Green CBE, director of the Eurovision Song Contest.

“ This decision reflects the most comprehensive financial pressure on public service media. Throughout our network of members, stations are working with limited budgets and facing significant cuts, while costs increase and pressures intensify. The Eurovision Song Contest is only a part of this broader context, and each season has to assess its own priorities,” he added.

He also said that the EBU “continues to work closely with its members to support the public service media” and said he hoped that CT would “rule the Festival when circumstances permit”.

The Czech Republic debuted in Eurovision in 2007 and left the competition between 2010 and 2014. The country returned in 2015 and participated in all editions until this year.

A total of 14 participants achieved twice the Top 10: in 2018 with and Mikolas Josef and “Lie To Me” (6th) and in 2023 with Vesna and “My Sister’s Crown” (10th).

This year, the country moved to the final, having achieved the 16th with Daniel Žižka’s “Crossroads” – whose performance can remember in the video below.

The UER announced that the Bulgarian city of Burgas, near the Black Sea, was chosen to host the 71st edition of the Eurovision Song Contest on 11th, 13th and 15th May 2027, after Dara’s victory with “Bangaranga” in this year’s edition.

Members will investigate the UK’s “bad history” in Eurovision

The UK’s “bad history” in Eurovision will be investigated by the British parliament, which intends to examine the criteria used by the BBC in the choice of representatives. The investigation comes after several years of poor results.
