A forecast published today is an annex to the draft budget that the government presented to the Duma, the lower chamber of the Russian Parliament and which is quoted in the news.
Russian President Vladimir Putin urged the adoption of the measure “as soon as possible”, indicated the American publication.
The value for the new systems is almost double the budgeted two years ago, when a funding programme of 32 billion rubles (about $370 million) was announced for monitoring and blocking Internet connections.
The experts consulted by Forbes point out that the increase in funding for blocking social networks and unwanted content may be related to Western sanctions arising from war and the need for more technological components in full expansion of Artificial Intelligence.
The Russian Internet blocking body is Roskomnadzor, an entity that oversees telecommunications in the country and which significantly intensified the restrictions soon after the end of the 20 September parliamentary elections.
The Russian press had already reported that the Ministry of Digital Development would extend the technical capacity to block the mobile Internet to cover all bandwidth.
To this end, the ministry has increased the budget by 14.9 billion rubles (about 170 million dollars), reaching a total of 83.7 billion rubles (almost one billion dollars).
Internet blocking and control has been one of the factors that has contributed to the fall in popularity rates of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
