O They executed three men convicted today for carrying out “operations in favor of the United States and Israel” and for participating in armed attacks against public facilities during the January anti-government protests.

With these three executions, the number of people who have been hanged for demonstrations-related convictions amounts to at least 39.

“ The death sentences of Hasán Divband, Hamid Kazemi and Reza Zanganeh, for participating in operations in favor of Israel, the United States and hostile groups, due to their active and armed participation in the riots on January 8 and 9 were executed,” said Mizan, Iranian Judiciary.

This communication body indicated that the executions took place after the Supreme Court confirmed the convictions.

According to Mizan, the three convicts participated in the mass protests on 8 and 9 January in Karaj, 50 kilometres west of Tehran, where they allegedly used firearms, hand grenades and Molotov cocktails, set fire to public installations and destroyed an electrical substation, which caused cuts in power supply in some areas.

The Mizan agency indicated that the defendants acted in a coordinated manner and following instructions received in advance and that they were arrested following an investigation of the information services.

In addition to the death penalty, Justice ordered the seizure of all assets, while eight other defendants of the same case received sentences between five and ten years in prison.

Last Tuesday, the Iranian authorities executed two men convicted of alleged involvement in the deaths of four police officers during the January protests in the central city of Isfahan.

These mobilizations broke out due to the deterioration of the economic situation and even demanded the end of the Islamic Republic, but were suffocated after a harsh repression in which, according to the Iranian authorities, 3,117 people died, while human rights organizations, such as HHANA, of the opposition, based in the United States, raise the number to more than seven thousand.

The Islamic Republic classified the demonstrations as riots or an attempt at a coup orchestrated by Israel and the United States.

Iran is one of the countries with the highest number of executions in the world and in 2025 the Iranian authorities executed at least 2,159 people, more than twice as many as in 2024 and the highest number recorded by Amnesty International in the country since 1981.
